About Us
The Municipality of Genova is a local authority. Genova is the largest city in the Liguria region and it is characterised by a narrow coastal zone with hills and steep mountains in the backcountry. Genova is the third largest city in Northern Italy in number of inhabitants, with a population that amounts to 607,000 people. This number increases to 850,000 when considering the whole metropolitan area. Genova has one of the largest ports in the Mediterranean and used to be one of the industrial hubs of Italy in the past. A very large historical centre is both a tourist opportunity as well as a urban and hydrogeological problem. All actors directly involved in the fragile territory is working together to rethink the model of sustainable growth of the entire community. The perception of a changing, evolving and participating city is mandatory for the Municipality.
The Municipality is in charge of building effective instruments for a different concept of local administration focused on: quality of life, liveability of the territory, and revival of itself by a sustainable economic growth based on research, innovation and technology. Genova as a Smart City is the main vision foreseen in the long-term period and all the initiatives carried out in the early and medium-period will contribute to implement the Framework of the Strategic Management Plan of the City.
The city of Genova is actively involved in many research projects focused on resilience, safety and security, education and solidarity, green mobility, better quality of life, eco-sustainable growth and natural environment care, economy and employment, communication and promotion of the city, port and infrastructures, and city management.

Co-creation Workshops in Genova
The Municipality of Genova organised three co-creation workshops that took place between March and April 2018. With the European Awareness Scenario Workshop methodology, citizens, representatives of local associations, urban planners, geology experts and the staff working for the Municipality of Genova, came together to create a vision, propose their ideas, and discuss their implementation. Results that arose from the co-creation activity were evaluated by designers and the municipality to ensure their technical and economic feasibility.
The Gavoglio park in Genova inspires the use of nature-based solutions for another park in the city
The works in the Gavoglio park have started and in the coming months the first nature-based solutions foreseen by the UNaLab project will be built. The experience gained thanks to the UNaLab project in the use of NBS has also led to another important result: NBS have been included among the requirements for the design of a new urban park for the city of Genova, which will be located in the areas affected by the collapse of the Morandi motorway bridge.
