Description

This scheme aims to protect important public areas for ecosystem services provision (e.g. clean water provision). This mechanism has been used for several cities to support peri-urban and rural watershed.

Example

Friends of the High Line was originally founded by citizens, but Catskills (USA) The New York City Department for Environmental Protection funds a Watershed Protection Program to provide high-quality drinking water for nine million water consumers. Landowners in the Catskills supply catchment are paid to implement measures which reduce diffuse pollution.
