Description
Free-standing living walls are fairly heavy installations consisting of vertically layered soil or substrate that is contained within metal caging. Vegetation is then planted on top of the installation and on its vertical sides. Verticalization of greenspaces is a space-efficient method of increasing vegetated surfaces with many ecological functions within urban environments. For example, they can support biodiversity, help improve local thermal comfort and can also be used as noise barriers along highly frequented roads.
Conditions for Implementation
- The ground and underground space needs to be sufficiently loadable to support this relatively heavy installation
- A sustainable irrigation system should be implemented
