Description

Planted embankment mats are a combination of biodegradable mats with a vegetation layer and are used to recultivate riverbanks and prevent erosion. The biodegradable mats themselves provide temporary erosion control, giving the vegetation time to develop and produce strong root networks, which then support longer-term erosion prevention. Additionally, using local vegetation can create or restore habitats and promote biodiversity. It is a simple method that can use local material, and is often implemented in combination with other soil bioengineering techniques like living fascines to maximize stabilization potential.

Conditions for Implementation
  • Appropriate construction timing (e.g. low water flow, no rainfall, appropriate season for vegetation development)
