Description

Increasing the opportunities for different actors to take an active part in different stages of the planning process will foster inclusivity in green space planning. This can be supported by a variety of different plans and policies such as comprehensive urban development strategies or green space plans. By making social inclusion a key element of these plans, different perspectives can be integrated into the planning process. Such plans and policies need to be long-term and, considering fast-paced development, they need to be updated on a regular basis.

Example

Example: BIP / ZIP, Lisbon

Through gathering statistical information relating to social, environmental and economic factors, the city of Lisbon has identified 67 target areas for project development to improve social cohesion and promote active citizenship. The areas have become targeted for funding of small projects (up to €50,000 per project) through networks of local actors with conditions attached related to the types of actors involved and business/governance model sustainability. There have been a range of successful projects that have helped achieve sustainability objectives. Some projects have directly enhanced ecosystem services in the area, particularly those targeting urban farming projects. In addition local municipal offices have been moved into the zones to as a symbolic and practical initiative. However, perhaps the most valuable element of the initiative is the visualisation of lower socioeconomic areas of the city which would be a useful tool when considering urban regeneration and urban greening.
