The City of Eindhoven is one of the five largest cities in The Netherlands with 230,000 inhabitants, while the Eindhoven region has more than 750,000 inhabitants. The city is one of the three economic engines of The Netherlands, delivering 14% of the national GDP.

The City of Eindhoven is the central, urbanised hub within the Brainport high-tech region in the south-east of the Netherlands, known as a centre of innovation, ICT, knowledge and design. With its Brainport 2020 Strategy, developed jointly by knowledge, business and public partners within the city and region, Eindhoven has set its strategic objectives for city and region for the coming decade.

Eindhoven is facing serious challenges due to rapid population growth. The population is estimated to increase from 220,000 in 2014 to 300,000 by 2030. Critical issues for the city, which are exacerbated by climate change, include flooding, urban heat stress, air pollution, and lower quality of life. The rapid urbanisation in recent years has also led to the disappearance of significant blue zones, which has had detrimental consequences to the urban environment and quality of life.

Several locations within the Eindhoven city centre with different characteristics constitute Eindhoven's demonstration sites for nature-based solutions. 

Eindhoven is planning to improve the air quality in the Vestdijk area by reducing traffic and implementing more green spaces, while also improving the quality of the existing green areas to enhance the liveability of the street.

The city will also implement several nature-based solutions in the Victoria Park, which used to be a parking place for the cars belonging to the employees of the Philips company. Many of the parking places have now been removed and a lawn has been planted. The next step for the city will be to daylight the Gender river and to construct a park around it.

The Clausplein will be reconstructed and the plan is to add trees and other green infrastructure to the square. A green roof will also be implemented on one the buildings surrounding the square. Further, the city is planning to implement a green wall on Mathildelaan and a green roof on a public building.
