UNaLab project partner Laura Wendling, Senior Scientist at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, wrote an article for the Finnish Civil Engineering association’s magazine Rakennustekniikka, under the topic Managing Urban Water in a Changing Climate. The article focuses on the problem of urban stormwater runoff, that is expected to increase in the future due to increasingly intense and frequent heavy precipitation events as a result of climate change. Wendling introduces the reader to the concept of nature-based solutions (NBS) and how they can offer a sustainable solution to mitigate urban flood risk. Further, the article touches upon the fact that NBS are co-created solutions that provide environmental, social and economic benfits for several groups of stakeholders.
